What is a Siren camera and how does it work?

Siren is specifically for fishing and is designed to let the angler fish as normal. The camera is not attached to the line while the angler attempts to catch fish, as its difficult enough without having an intrusive camera unit complicate things and turn-off the fish! The Siren camera has a specially designed quick-connect mechanism that allows the angler to very easily secure it to the line whenever required - usually as soon as a fish is hooked. Once connected to the line, the camera is free-running, and so, on release by the angler, Siren slides down the line to the water surface then floats in a deliberately stabilized position. There are two lenses within the unit facing in opposite directions – one looking down the line towards the fish, and the other looking back up the line to the angler. Because the Siren camera is buoyant, no additional weight is added to the line while the camera records incredible footage of the fish being retrieved towards it, and the angler in action as the fight unfolds!

Is there a Siren App?

Yes – the Siren App is in development and is being designed to allow you to view, edit and share footage. The App will also allow you to create groups with your friends / fishing colleagues and record data (water temperature, GPS, Date, Time) and trends if you wish.

How do I access the Siren camera footage after I’m finished recording?

All data transfer is achieved through a Wi-Fi connection transmitted from the Siren camera unit. In fact, we’ve deliberately designed the unit so internal Siren electronics never need to be exposed to the external environment. We’ve learned lessons before from using electronics in a marine environment and so have created ways to keep the ‘brain’ of Siren safely protected:

Footage / Data: Retrieved to your mobile phone / Siren App through Wi-Fi connection. 
Battery Charging: Wirelessly charged.
Camera activation: Through a magnetic force created as the fishing line quick-connect mechanism is squeezed by the angler.

How much will the camera cost?

Production costs are becoming clearer as we finalize the design. We aim to make Siren camera retail price competitive against current action cameras entering the market.

Do I lose my Siren camera if the line snaps?

No. The camera is deliberately designed to be free-running on the line and is positively buoyant. If the line breaks, it simply runs through the body of the Siren camera leaving the unit floating on the surface for retrieval. The distinctive orange color on the camera makes it standout in the water, while the Wi-Fi connection between the camera and your phone will also help identify its location and assist retrieval should you lose sight of it. On retrieval you may even be lucky enough to see the fish that busted you off!

Can I stream live footage to my mobile phone while the camera is in the water?

Yes, so long as the mobile phone remains within the cameras’ Wi-Fi radius, and the camera stays on the surface. We think this provides a unique opportunity for the likes of Fishing Charters to live stream onto a screen in the boat so everyone can enjoy the action! Please note we have experienced the Siren camera be dragged underwater by strong current when attached to the line with a powerful fish on the end. In this case the Wi-Fi connection is disrupted, but don’t worry, the Siren camera keeps recording underwater and the sub-surface footage looking back at the underside of the boat is some of our favorite action shots! The perspectives are like nothing you’ve seen before! If the unit is underwater and the line snaps, all the forces pushing it below the surface are removed and the unit will quickly pop back to the surface for retrieval.

How deep is the camera rated to?

The camera is positively buoyant and designed to remain on the surface, but has been engineered to withstand water depths of up to 100m.

How stable is the camera when in the water?

After 2 years of trial and error with prototypes, we have engineered the camera unit very carefully with specific ballast and positively buoyant material to maximize stability. Much in the same way a yacht stays upright when on the ocean, Siren follows these principles to ensure fantastic footage is captured. The unit also has electronic image stabilization included within the software. Please note, it is inevitable that the camera unit will move with the environment its operating in, but we’ve found this adds to the excitement and realism of the footage!

Is the Siren camera patent protected?

Yes. Siren is a unique and novel product which is International Patent pending in over 150 countries.
