On Wednesday evening (16th Oct) Siren was pitched to a local group of business people and entrepreneurs at StartUp Redlands (https://startupredlands.com.au) monthly event, and we walked away with the Top Prize!
The evening consisted of x3 startups, pitching their businesses to a panel of x3 judges, and a 30 strong crowd of interested spectators.
Co-founder Phil West, who delivered the Siren Cameras pitch, picked-up the $200 winners cheque form event sponsors Bendigo Bank.
"Its great to get along to events like this, and we took a lot from it", said Phil.
"Contacts, pitching experience, some new perspectives on where the business value sits, and covering some complex questions really helps ensure we correctly position our business.
It was very worthwhile, and fantastic to get really positive feedback as the majority of Startup effort is often carried out under the radar and in isolation, with not much more than intuition and determination pushing new businesses forward.
For that reason, these local events are invaluable for Startups like Siren, and to win the event against such strong competition really validates and encourages that we’re doing”.
Also competing on the night was ‘MIIT' - a social platform that connects you with others nearby who share your interests to help you make new friends or find interesting things to do; and ‘Redfish' - which has developed a line of building automation products for use in hotels, and commercial and high-end residential buildings.
Against these broader Startups, the Siren team were somewhat surprised to win the event. Phil concluded, “MIIT and Redfish both delivered excellent pitches, and these businesses focus on massive and broad markets.
So for our Siren Fishing camera, which is targeted at a more niche market and not always the easiest product to explain to those not interested in Recreational Fishing, to convince the judging panel to award us a win based on our Business and its scale-up potential is a great result and shows how niche can often mean lucrative”.
